Aprils Fool's Day And Mona Lisa
The Mona Lisa holds many secrets. However, there has been one "secret" that has been proven not to be true. The April Fool's hoax of 1935.Year 1935, The Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung reported the discovery that Leonardo da Vinci had originally painted the Mona Lisa frowning, not smiling – the overpainted smile being ordered by its then-owner, King Franz I.
As a result, the conservation department at the Louvre decided to restore the painting back to its original condition.
There is also a similar hoax that was published in 1990 by The Independent.
To myth to rest once and for all, Pascal Cotte used the LAM technique. The image on the left is a digital reconstruction of what Pascal Cotte believes lies underneath Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
“The LAM technique gives us the capability to peel the painting like an onion, removing the surface to see what’s happening inside and behind the different layers of paint,” he told the BBC back then.
Did you know that the Mona Lisa is not one of a kind?
Actually, there are at least four different versions painted by Leonardo da Vinci and his students. But the one we all know and love is at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. The others can be found at the Prado Museum and in numerous private collections.
