Ways to Surprise Mom on Mother’s Day
While being a mom is one of the most rewarding jobs on the planet, it can also be one of the easiest to take for granted. This Mother’s Day, show your mom that you notice and appreciate how much she’s done for you with a day full of surprises.Instead of the standard “take mom out of lunch and give her a bouquet of grocery store flowers” Mother’s Day routine, think outside the box. If you've got the time, come up with ideas that will make her feel special from morning until bedtime. She’ll love the thought and effort that you put into making her day special! We’ve got a few ideas to get you started.
START EARLY
This one’s kind of a no-brainer. Who doesn’t like waking up to a delicious breakfast? It doesn’t need to be served in bed (nobody likes toast crumbs in the sheets), but mom will enjoy waking up to the smells of bacon and coffee. Of course you’re going to wash those dishes without being asked, right?
While your mom might think a delicious breakfast she doesn’t have to cook or clean up after is the extent of your Mother’s Day plan, the surprises are just beginning!
PLAY ALL DAY
After your surprise breakfast, keep the ball rolling with a full day itinerary of activities you can enjoy together. Don’t tell her where you’re going next, just help her choose something appropriate to wear for whatever you’re planning and get her in the car with destination unknown.
Where should you take her? Think of things you know she would be into but might not ordinarily go on her own. A wine tasting, symphony performance, quilting show, spa day – the choices are endless! If she’s the active type, take her to play 18 holes, go rock climbing, or have a tennis match. Whatever you choose, it will be even more fun because you’re doing it together.
HER DAY, HER WAY
Maybe your mom loves a restaurant nobody else in the family is crazy about, or loves a musician you think is kind of dorky. Mother’s Day is all about her, so cater your Mother’s Day plans around her preferences. Chances are, her preferences have taken a backseat to the rest of the family for years! So buy those tickets to see Hall & Oates and act excited about it!
SPEAK FROM THE HEART
Rather than choosing a Hallmark card off the rack, surprise your mom with a letter recounting all the things you love about her and the reasons you appreciate her. A heartfelt note in your own words will mean so much more than standard greeting card platitudes with your name scrawled underneath.
Talking about feelings isn’t easy for some people, but this doesn’t have to be a really serious emotional undertaking. If some of the things you love about your mom are silly or routine, that’s fine! She’ll be thrilled to know that you notice all the little things. A handwritten message expressing your gratitude is a surprise to top them all.
GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME
Let’s face it: Most moms don’t get a lot of time to themselves. While it sounds a little strange to send mom off to do something by herself as a Mother’s Day gift, she’ll almost certainly jump at the chance for a little “me” time. This is a good opportunity for a gift card to be used at a later date, so you can still spend the holiday together.
In an unofficial poll of moms we know, 100% said they would relish the chance to stay in a hotel for a night by themselves, order takeout, sleep in, and watch the TV show of their choosing without anybody asking them for anything. While kicking mom out of the house for a weekend is an unexpected gift, it would almost certainly be a welcome one. If that isn’t in the budget, a massage gift card, movie tickets, or a certificate for a spa mani/pedi would also be fantastic choices.
