(1) Pi is an irrational number, meaning its decimal representation goes on infinitely without repeating. It has been calculated to over 31 trillion digits beyond its decimal point.
(2) The symbol for pi (π) has been used for over 250 years. It was first used by Welsh mathematician William Jones in 1706, but it was popularized by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.
(3) Pi is not just a mathematical curiosity; it has practical applications in various fields, including engineering, physics, and computing. For example, it is essential for calculating the circumference and area of circles, as well as for solving equations involving waves and oscillations.
(4) Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) worldwide because the first three digits of pi are 3.14. In some countries, Pi Day is also celebrated on July 22nd (22/7), which is a common approximation of pi.
