A Day of Remembrance: Memorial Day Traditions in Naperville
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed on the last Monday of May each year. It is a day to honor and remember the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The day is marked by various ceremonies, parades, and tributes across the country, as well as visits to cemeteries and the decoration of graves with flags and flowers. It is also seen as the unofficial start of the summer season in the United States.
This year, Memorial Day will be Monday, May 29th

There’s no shortage of great things to do in our city, no matter what time of year it is, but with all of the history this town offers, Memorial Day is special in many ways.
Enjoy these fun facts:
*Naperville was founded by Captain Joseph Naper, a veteran of the War of 1812. He and his brother, John Naper, arrived in the area and established a settlement along the DuPage River. The settlement grew rapidly and became known as Naper's Settlement.
*: Naperville's early growth was driven by industries such as milling, farming, and the establishment of educational institutions. The construction of mills along the river led to economic prosperity, and the town became a center for trade and commerce.
*The arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1864 further stimulated Naperville's growth, connecting it to Chicago and facilitating transportation of goods and people. This led to the expansion of the town's industries and population.
*Naperville has a strong educational heritage. North Central College, founded in 1861, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Illinois. The town also has a well-regarded school district and several private schools.
*Naperville's downtown area preserves its historic charm with a mix of well-preserved buildings and modern amenities. Many of the downtown buildings date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, housing a variety of shops, restaurants, and businesses.
*The Naperville Historic Preservation Commission works to protect and preserve historic sites and structures in the city. Several historic buildings and landmarks are designated as local landmarks or listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
