Shop Naperville Small Businesses This Holiday Weekend!
Small businesses have gone to extraordinary lengths this year to re-invent themselves, support their local communities and keep trading despite the pandemic. The message we want to get across is that you need to use them or lose them, and this Christmas is the perfect time to show your support.Black Friday has been around since the early 1960s, when police officers in Philadelphia began using the phrase “Black Friday” to describe the chaos that resulted when large numbers of suburban tourists came into the city to begin their holiday shopping and, in some years, attend Saturday’s annual Army-Navy football game. The huge crowds created a headache for the police, who worked longer shifts than usual as they dealt with traffic jams, accidents, shoplifting, and other issues.
Though the thought of the origin of the holiday weekend sounds pretty negative, it's not so bad with all of the deals, traditions of shopping and family time together, and of course, getting into the Christmas holiday with shopping! BUT... This large shopping day isn't for everyone...
Though this wave of discounting can appear all-consuming, there are a growing number of people who are rejecting this "fast shopping" culture. These conscious consumers are looking for alternatives to over-consumption with it's devastating environmental impact.
Instead, they are looking to "shop small" and support independent businesses. A larger percentage of consumers are actively planning to buy more from independent businesses online this year (as they did last year during the pandemic);
Awareness is steadily being raised that so many artists, makers, independent shops, and small businesses have really embraced their digital presence. If you need to shop online this Christmas, you can certainly do that and support smaller sellers.

Here's what's going on with our studio the weekend following Thanksgiving 2021:
PLAID FRIDAY:
Friday, November 26th
Plaid Friday encourages people to do their holiday shopping with locally owned and independent businesses the day after Thanksgiving.
Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, California, to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion.
According to event organizers, the name ‘Plaid Friday’ was chosen from the idea of weaving individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates independent businesses. While Plaid Friday may have originated in California, it has now spread to local towns across the country. Plaid Friday precedes Small Business Saturday, meaning holiday shoppers can turn their two-day, post-Thanksgiving shopping excursions into 48 hours of opportunities to support small businesses.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY:
Saturday, November 27th
Keep the Small Business Love coming into the weekend with some fun classes
First observed in the United States on November 27, 2010, Small Business Saturday is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.
The first event was created by American Express, in partnership with the non-profit National Trust for Historic Preservation, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, and Roslindale Village Main Street. In 2010, the holiday was promoted by American Express via a nationwide radio and television advertising campaign. That year Amex bought advertising inventory on Facebook, which, in turn, gave to its small merchant account holders, and also gave rebates to new customers to promote the event.
American Express publicized the initiative using social media, advertising, and public relations. Many local politicians and small business groups in the United States issued proclamations concerning the campaign which generated more than one million Facebook "like" registrations and nearly 30,000 tweets under the Twitter hashtags #smallbusinesssaturday and #smallbizsaturday.
