Ways To Participate In 'Breast Cancer Awareness Month’
October means ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.
The usual ways of raising money and awareness are likely cancelled this year, due to the virus. From walks and rallies, to large gatherings for fundraisers, and more, help guidelines are dictating what can and can’t be done… BUT there are still lots of great ways to participate in this special month.
Here are some of our favorite ideas for making the most of this month and helping others to learn more, raise more, and care more.
-- Provide education --
Sharing these facts with your employees may save a life. Send them off in a newsletter, share this blog, or print a list to hang in the break room. The following facts are from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. and American Cancer Society, which offer excellent resources to learn more about breast cancer.

1 in 8 women receive a breast cancer diagnosis
On average, every 2 minutes a female is diagnosed with breast cancer

-- Make Strides --
Upload to a breast cancer awareness digital video collage: Necessary social distancing guidelines will prevent the American Cancer Society from hosting its annual 8,000-person Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Midland Beach, but Staten Islanders are still encouraged to walk with a group of friends and share photos and videos on social media using #MakingStridesSI. Your image may appear in a digital mosaic on Facebook.com/MakingStridesStatenIsland on Oct. 26 at 4 p.m.
Go on a scavenger hunt with cityHunt®. Download the cityHunt® digital app and go on a two-hour adventure in your own neighborhood, with clues created exclusively for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer supporters. Your group of up to five players will follow clues to solve problems, take pictures, make videos, and celebrate breast cancer survivors. To obtain a download link, your team must be registered at MakingStridesWalk.org/StatenIsland and have raised at least $500.
-- Hold a pink pumpkin contest --
What’s better than combining Halloween activities with a good cause? Have your friends and family create their best breast cancer awareness pumpkin to showcase in a virtual meeting!
Ask coworkers to participate and display pumpkins in the lobby at work (or even the local chamber of commerce office) with collection jars next to each one. The pumpkin with the most jar donations wins! Donate the funds to a cause like Susan G. Komen or a local cancer center for women.
-- Share “Beyond The Shock” resource --
This free resource is an online guide and app to better understand breast cancer. It’s an ideal resource for anyone struggling with a breast cancer diagnosis. Users can also watch inspirational videos from breast cancer survivors sharing their stories.
-- Collect scarves and hats --
Do you have a family full of givers? Take up a collection of brand-new scarves and hats to deliver to a local chemo center. Since many women lose their hair during treatment, a bright scarf or hat will make her day. Better yet, if any of your loved ones enjoy knitting or crocheting, ask them if they’d be willing to make some hats.
-- DIY fundraiser --
You can pick your own style of fundraising — individually or as a team with friends and family; You can also choose to join an already existing fundraiser as well. Check out the Susan G. Komen fundraising site for details and share with other loved ones who may want to participate too.
***Speaking of fundraising…
Ask us all about our Fundraising Opportunities through our ‘Painting It Forward’ program.
We are STILL holding event in the staid AND virtually, and yes, we are STILL working with customers to contribute to their money-raising needs.
If you or someone you know is looking for a way to raise money for their favorite non-profit organization, look to Pinot’s Palette! We’ve been hosting large events, including fundraisers for years, and we want to assist you with your needs in any way we can.
If you want to host your event as a private one, you get to select the time and date of your party, as well as choose the guest list and painting you’ll create. Part of the proceeds from your event (in-studio OR virtual) will go to the charity or non-profit of your choice).
The other option for your fundraiser would be one of our regular classes, open to the public, set up as a money-raising event. Anyone can attend, including the guests you invite, and a portion of the proceeds will go to your organization. The good thing is that your class will be very likely to fill up, with all of the public invited; The downside is that we’re still only allowing limited seating, so there won’t be the potential to have as many guests as an online event would.
You can reach out to us with your inquiries and we can best guide you to the event that’s right for you and your group! :)
