Celebrate 'Women’s History Month' With Your BFFs!
This March marks the 36th annual Women's History Month. The month-long observance is a time to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of women throughout U.S. history. Chicago in particular has been home to female trailblazers, from Ida B. Wells to Gwendolyn Brooks to Jane Addams.Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed a law that authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.”
Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.”
In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed a law that designated the full month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.”
Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.
Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.
Celebrate All Of The Women In Your Life With A Girls' Night Out!
***** Health Benefits of a Girls’ Night Out *****
Female friendship isn't just good for the soul: It's good for your health. Researchers, who studied elderly women over a period of 10 years, concluded the presence of "good friends" in a woman's life increased life expectancy. The researchers also identified that several "key” friends are essential to a healthy woman's life, including childhood friends, "like-minded" friends, spiritual friends, new friends, sports companions, life mates, and one's mother.
Girlfriends are stress-busters for women and have an impact on overall mood. It seems that when we're around friends, the mood-elevating hormone oxytocin is released, increasing our feelings of euphoria.
Women with abundant friendships (the more good friends the better, ladies!) decrease their risk of death, the study concludes. Not having regular contact with girlfriends has been shown to be as detrimental to one's health as smoking or packing on pounds!
What a girl's night does for women is tap into an essential truth about our gender, which is that women need to be heard. What is true for most women is that the men in their lives (*be it a spouse, a boyfriend, or even colleagues at work) don't have the capacity to hear them when they are feeling stressed or overwhelmed; And even when they don't need to vent, women need a break from the demands of their day-to-day lives.
*This is especially true of women with young children. They can be isolated and just need to get out of the house and connect with other adults sometimes.
