Wine Stains and Watercolors: Unconventional Painting Methods
They say that wine is the only art that you can drink, however it is possible to create art with wine, making something that will last longer than the time it takes to drink a glass. We are talking about creating paintings using this delicious bottled delight.
From painting with wine in it’s liquid form, to adding it to paints, and even incorporating the bottles, labels, and corks into the mix, you can make some unique artwork to call your very own.
Here are some ideas for using vino, other than drinking it… And hey, if you want to enjoy some wie while painting with it, we highly suggest the ironic idea! (*just remember NOT to dip your paintbrush into the wine glass that you’re drinking out of.) :)
***** Wine Stains and Washes *****
Artists can use wine as a staining or wash medium in painting. Red wine, in particular, can create rich, warm tones when diluted with water or other painting mediums. By varying the concentration and application techniques, artists can achieve a range of effects, from delicate washes to bold, expressive strokes.
***** Wine Ink or Dye *****
Wine can be used as a natural ink or dye for drawing and calligraphy. By reducing wine to a concentrated liquid or powder form, artists can create pigmented inks that can be applied with brushes, pens, or other drawing tools. This approach adds a unique depth and richness to the artwork, as well as a subtle aroma of the wine itself.
***** Wine Stain Art *****
Instead of using wine as a painting medium, artists can embrace wine stains as an integral part of their artwork. By intentionally spilling or dripping wine onto paper or canvas, artists can create abstract patterns and textures that evoke a sense of spontaneity and movement. This approach celebrates the organic beauty of accidents and imperfections, resulting in truly unique and expressive artworks.

*** Mixed Media Collage ***
Wine labels, corks, and even wine bottles themselves can be incorporated into mixed media collage artworks. Artists can use wine labels as decorative elements, collage materials, or even as the focal point of the artwork. Corks can be sliced, carved, or shaped into intricate patterns or sculptural elements, adding texture and visual interest to the piece.
*** Wine Bottle Art ***
Empty wine bottles can be repurposed and transformed into works of art. Artists can paint, etch, or decorate wine bottles with various techniques and mediums, creating decorative vases, candle holders, or sculptures. The translucent quality of glass allows for the interplay of light and color, enhancing the visual impact of the artwork.
*** Wine Cork Printing ***
Wine corks can be carved, textured, or shaped into stamps for printmaking. Artists can create intricate patterns or designs on paper or fabric by dipping wine corks in ink or paint and stamping them onto the surface. This technique allows for endless experimentation and creativity, as artists explore different ways to manipulate and combine wine corks to achieve desired effects.
There are some really interesting artists out there who use wine as their medium of choice. These are some of our favorites. Check them out and admire their incredible talent:
Sanja Jankovic
*See in the photo, above
This is a wine-painted work of art depicting the painting, ‘Lady with An Ermine' by Leonardo Da Vinci, fun fact- the woman in this portrait was the mistress of a duke so her smile (more apparent in the original painting) and her gaze was a subtle nod to him (by implying that he was just out of sight)
