What Are Some Great Ways To Stay Cool When It’s HOT Out?!
We love our city and all that it has to offer, but during the Summer…. it sure does offer a lot of heat! Sometimes it can be a bit much and it’s good to have some tips on hand to beat the heat this season and stay cool when you can. Whether you’re suffering from no AC, having to make it through dreaded yard work, or trying to plan your meals around the heat waves, we’ve got some ideas for you! Check them out and be sure to stay cool and safe in the hot days of summer this year!
So, what are the best ways to stay cool in the extreme heat, all Summer-long??
(1) Light is Right!
Light-colored bed linens made of lightweight cotton (Egyptian or otherwise) are breathable and excellent for promoting ventilation and airflow in the bedroom. We sleep best when the environment is set around 68 degrees. If you have an AC, you’re all set… otherwise get those fans, angled towards the bed and take in the breeze while you sleep!
*If you’re in need of an air conditioning unit but don’t have the money to spend on it, read on to find an inexpensive alternative.
(2) Know The Right Spots
Need to cool down, stat? To chill out super-fast, apply ice packs or cold compresses to pulse points at the wrists, neck, elbows, groin, ankles, and behind the knees. If you don’t have an ice pack on hand and you’re inside, rinse a wash cloth or hand towel in cold water and put into the freezer for a while, then apply. If you’re outside, find any type of fabric you can and dowse it with the coldest water you can get to and apply. This is a great way to cool down while doing yard work.

(3) Use that sunscreen!
Check out some great tips for applying sunscreen, the right way:
1. Always apply SPF 30 or more.
(At the minimum, you should be applying broad spectrum SPF 15 for protection against UVA and UVB rays. But since most wearers don’t lather on enough product, many dermatologists recommend SPF 30)
2. Slather on a shot glass sized amount.
(That’s 1 oz. of lotion and is about what it takes to fully cover you)
3. Check the expiration date.
(Always check the bottle for an expiration date. If it doesn’t have one, you can assume it loses its effectiveness after 3 years)
4. Focus on one area at a time.
(This will ensure zero streaking and that you get to every spot on your body)
5. Reapply, reapply, reapply.
(Remember to reapply your payer of sunscreen every 2 hours. If you’re working up a serious sweat, try to reapply every 30-60 min)
(4) Eat Right!
-Avoid salt, alcohol, and caffeine. All of these dehydrate the body. Caffeine also constricts blood vessels, which hinders the body’s ability to cool itself, says Mathis. Instead, sip water or an energy drink, such as Gatorade, suggests Bauer. “In extreme heat, these drinks replace lost fluids, glucose, and potassium.”
-Eat more often (*but eat less)
Spicy foods, protein-laden meals, and creamy ingredients can raise your body temperature and send you into a metabolic overdrive, says Joy Bauer, a registered dietician in New York City. So it’s best to steer clear of heavy meals and go for fruits and vegetables, which are saturated with water and help keep your body hydrated and comfortable.
-Summer is not the time to whip up a piping hot casserole or roast chicken. Instead, chow down on cool, room-temperature dishes (salads are the best!) to avoid generating any more heat in the house. If hot food is in order, fire up the grill instead of turning on the oven. And swap big meals for smaller, lighter dinners that are easier to metabolize. The body produces more heat after you chow down on a huge steak than a platter of fruits, veggies, and legumes.

(6) DIY AC!
Whether you have no air conditioning, one that doesn’t work so well, or if yours is broken, you can turn a few common objects into a makeshift AC for those mega hot days!
All you need is a 5 gallon bucket, some pvc pipes, a fan, and some water-turned ice!

(7) Don’t Forget About Those Fur-Babies!
If it’s too hot for you to be outside, then it’s absolutely too hot for your pooch.
All dogs have a low toleration when it comes to the heat. They can’t sweat to control their body temperature like we can (especially flat-nosed breeds like pugs and bulldogs) ad they do't have a voice to tell us their too hot. We have to be their heroes and decide what's best for them and make it happen.

(8) Find An Air Conditioned Building To Spend Time In!
Enjoy time in a restaurant, movie theatre, or somewhere else like a painting and wine studio where the AC is included and you can keep busy until the heat dies down.
