National Pet Month Is Here! What’s It All About?
May is National Pet Month, a celebration of the benefits that pets bring to people's lives and vice-versa. This month of the year aims to promote the benefits of pet ownership, support pet adoption, and make people aware of the benefits of pets for people and people for pets. It's also good for increasing public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals and raising awareness of the role, value and contribution to society of working companion animals.
Some of the top benefits of adopting a pet:
1. You’ll save a life
Saving a life just may be one of the most rewarding actions in a person’s life. Some pet shelters have to put down animals if they do not get adopted. If you choose to adopt a pet from an animal shelter or animal adoption agency, you are not only saving a precious animal’s life, you are also greatly increasing its quality of life.
2. You’ll save money
When you adopt a pet, you are actually saving a lot of money. Animals that have been placed in shelters or taken to animal adoption agencies are almost always spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Those preliminary, but necessary procedures add up when all is said and done. Also, it is relatively inexpensive to adopt a pet from an agency or shelter in comparison to purchasing dogs or cats from a local pet store.
3.You’ll receive a healthy pet
As was mentioned above, pets from shelters and adoption agencies are almost always spayed or neutered, and have received their vaccinations as well. This ensures the health and happiness of your future pet. Also, in contradiction to popular belief, many pets who have been placed in shelters have not been mistreated or “done something wrong.” Many pets have been taken there because of people problems, such as divorce, a big move, or they are simply too busy to adequately provide care for a pet.
4.You won’t be supporting puppy mills (and pet stores)
Many pets that are sold in pet stores or newspaper ads sometimes come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are mass dog-breeding businesses that are harmful to the health of their bred puppies. These facilities sometimes house up to several hundred dogs at a time, thus compromising the health and well-being of a precious puppy. By adopting a pet from a shelter or a pet adoption agency, you are not supporting these often inhumane businesses.
5. You’ll have a large selection
Because pet adoption agencies and animal shelters have many pets, there is a wide selection for you to choose from. To make pet shopping easier on potential parents, many pet agencies and shelters have websites that allow people to search for possible pets by their age, sex, size, and breed. This enables families to search from the comfort of their own homes; the hassle of going to noisy and overwhelming shelters and agencies is eliminated.
6. Pets help our health and make us happier
Various studies have shown that a having pet can elongate your life, whilst improving your overall happiness and health. It also helps people with depression, stress, anxiety and many other ailments. The affectionate and loyal nature of dogs as pack animals that form close relationships with their owners can help sufferers of depression, who may feel like they don’t have anybody else. Stroking your pet can reduce your blood pressure and stress levels, and playing with them can increase the levels of serotonin and dopamine your body produces, making you feel calm and relaxed. Walking the pet is a way to exercise and provides sufferers of anxiety and depression with a reason to leave the house. It also creates opportunities for socialising with other dog walkers. The animal you have helped through rehoming can help you.
Pinot’s Palette LOVES pets, too!
'Project pet’ is a specialty class that we offer, on average, about 2 times a month (sometimes, more). Sometimes it’s just for our customers to enjoy a day, painting their furry (or feathered to scaly or gilled…) bff, and other times we offer the class as fundraiser to help a local pet organization.
Be sure to check out our calendar throughout the weeks, as we are constantly updating out calendar and adding classes! Join us and paint a portrait of your pet in our 'Project Pet’ classes! Once you sign up for the painting, email us a picture of your pet and we'll do the rest. Each photo will be transferred onto a 16”X20” canvas, making it even easier for you to paint. Our talented artists will walk you through the steps to create your very own, personalized pet portrait! Think you can’t possibly create your fur baby (or well.. one that actually looks like them) with little to no painting experience?? Yes, you CAN! We have helped so many people who have walk into the class, convinced their painting wouldn’t turn out. It’s always the best part for our staff at Pinot’s Palette to see those that thought they couldn’t do it, leave with the smile on the face and a masterpiece in their hands at the end of the class!
