Unleash Some Creativity In The Workplace!
One of the last places you might think of as a “creative space” is your job. Unless you work in an art field, or perhaps a school, there isn’t much creativity, found, in the average job. Sitting at a desk, working the 9-5 grind, day after day, can wear anyone down. It’s important to have some form of creativity in your everyday life, so why not the workplace?
While the concept of ‘Promoting Creativity’ must come from the ones that run the place (aka, the bosses), there are ways you can foster some creative tactics into your work routine, as well.
“Being creative at work generally means taking risks, which might make you hesitate. Fear of the unknown is a powerful thing, especially when it means you might fail.
But here’s the thing: Creativity in the workplace is absolutely important. If you can apply creative thinking to your everyday work life, you’ll find that not only will the day stop feeling like drudgery, but you’ll be unlocking more meaningful results. And this doesn’t just go for employees, but for managers as well–in fact, managers have the ability to be the conductors of creativity in their staff. Sometimes it has to start from the top!”
Create be thinkers come up with ideas that are unique; these ideas might not always be welcomed or nurtured at work. But while it’s easy to continue to take the same route in doing things, that’s where creative thinkers shine! They break out of the ordinary and try out different tactics, bravely, and many times, successfully! Someone has to risk trying a new way, maybe time and time again, but the end result can be better than the original! It’s good to shake things up a bit, to change with the times, and try to stay ahead of the game. We need the creative thinkers of the world to be those risk-takers and see what can happen!
**As an employee:
-Surround Yourself With Inspiration
*You’ve heard it before: “Surround yourself with others who inspire and challenge you.”
It’s true: the more positive, strong, and productive people you are around, the more you will be like them. Find others who are creative (or aspire to find their creativity), and sit near them at a work desk or in a meeting... or even, in the lunchroom! Bounce ideas and inspiration off of one another and see what happens!
-Get Out of the Office
*If you’re able to work from home, try out different locations. See how working in the park, the library, a coffee shop, or by the pool, can spark your creativity. WORKING outside the box (literally), can change your perspective and help you to also THINK outside the box!
-Fuel Up on Creativity
*Take some time, during the day, to do something creative, no matter how small. If your job is just to type, or some other repetitious task, listen to podcasts that inspire creativity in some way, while you work.
Take advantage of your lunch break or the commute (if you take a bus or train) and read self-help books, keep a journal or sketchbook, take up knitting, etc...
(*You could also listen to a motivational/creative podcast or audiobook, if you have a long drive to work).
Use any extra time between the job, or down-time during the job to explore your creative side.

**As a boss:
-Fostering creativity shows employees that they can change their workplace.
*“Letting people make a visible, tangible impact on their work environment is a powerful motivator. No one wants to feel like a drone, mindlessly working through a task list having no apparent meaningful impact.
One of the keys to nurturing a creative workplace is to give all workers a way to voice their ideas. And by surfacing those ideas with your entire organization, you simultaneously make workers feel valued and spread new, innovative thinking throughout your business.”
-It gets people emotionally invested
*Being able to take charge of a project or assignment, and doing so in a safe and encouraging environment is a huge positive! Work without passion is trite and depressing; it’s just mindless, basic, tasks being carried out. Help your workers to feel an emotional attachment to what they are working on, and you’re sure to see some phenomenal results!
When employees can nurture an idea from the beginning, all the way to it’s execution, they become more passionate and emotionally invested in their work. They will make a larger effort to see their idea, come to life.
-Promoting creativity removes the fear of failure.
*“Failure that arises in the pursuit of new ideas should be celebrated.”
Creative thinkers are able to recognize failure, then grow from it. Being afraid to try new things and new ways of doing old things... won’t get you anywhere, except where you’ve already been. Taking a risk, thinking outside of the box, and trying something new, could result in big outcomes! Imagine how much harder an employee would work at trying new things, if they knew it was ok to fail, as long as you try again?!
