Uses for the Insides of Your Pumpkin!
Pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere! Fall is here, and we can finally get our hands on these glorious gourds! Pumpkins are really doing the most these days. You can find them in just about any color, shape or size. We see endless ideas on Pinterest and all social media on how to decorate the perfect Halloween pumpkin. There is definitely no shortage of information on what to do with the outside of a pumpkin but what about the inside? Most of the time we just throw out the “guts’ but here are a few ideas on how to make the inside useful and get the most for your pumpkin buck!
ROAST THE SEEDS!
This is not only a great idea but a delicious and nutritious one. You can have them on their own, add them to a party trail mix, a soup topping, instead of peanut brittle- pumpkin brittle, add to a salad or pumpkin seed granola cookies. To roast pumpkin seeds first toss them in a bowl and coat with melted butter and salt. Spread seeds on a prepared baking sheet and cook for 25 minutes.
DOG TREATS!
Pumpkin is a very healthy snack for dogs! Pumpkin is very filling and a great alternative for dogs that might be a little on the heavy side. Add it to a dog treat recipe or mix it into there dog food as a calorie replacer. My personal favorite is to slice a pumpkin, place it on a baking sheet and cook it in the oven at 200 degrees for a few hours until it turns into pumpkin jerky. Dogs will get tricked into a healthy treat.
PUMPKIN BODY SCRUB!
Pumpkin contains antioxidants that are nutrient rich for our skin. We all could use a little extra vitamin A and C to help give us a healthy glow during this cool weather. Place your peeled and chopped small pumpkin in the oven at 350 degrees until tender. Place your cooled pumpkin in a bowl and add raw sugar, 1 tsp of honey and a tsp of coconut oil. Mix all ingredients and enjoy! Scrub away!
PUMPKIN SOUP
Soup season is the best season, hands down! Roasted pumpkin makes a beautiful velvety soup. Pour your pureed soup in a mini pumpkin served with the pumpkin seeds you have already roasted.
PUMPKIN BUTTER
Pumpkin butter is not only delicious but a wonderful gift idea. This can even be easily made overnight in a slow cooker. Place two small pumpkins peeled and cubed, 2 tsp butter, 2 cups of brown sugar, ¼ cup of apple juice, ½ tsp of vanilla, 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, 1 tsp of ground ginger, ½ tsp of nutmeg and ¼ tsp of cloves. You can store this in a jar or airtight container for up to two weeks.
