STEP 1: PREP YOUR PIECE!
The first step in prepping your piece is to clean it! Especially if it's been stored in an attic or dusty garage. Oil Soaps work well and are safe for furniture. Remove all the drawers and the hardware. Make sure to keep all small pieces in a container or a zip-top bag. Believe me; you will be thankful you did!
STEP 2: SAND
You will want to sand any glossy finish off of your piece of furniture. You need to roughen up the surface so your paint will have something to hold on to. If your piece is already dull, you can skip this process.
STEP 3: PRIME TIME!
As soon is your piece is clean and dry you will next need to apply a primer. A good primer will cover most stains and odors and gives you pant something to grab onto to.
STEP 4: SAND AGAIN
Sand once more and sand between each layer of paint. This will allow the paint to hold and helps give a more professional finish.
STEP 5: PAINT
The part you’ve been waiting for! Paint thin coats of preferably latex paint and remember to sand between each coat. Allow each coat to completely dry before applying another. There are several ways to apply your paint. You can use a paint sprayer, a can of spray paint or a regular brush or roller.
STEP 6: PROTECTING YOUR HARD WORK!
Now that you’ve let the paint dry for at least 24 hours you are ready to seal it. Sealing your paint will help protect the paint while also making it easy to wipe your furniture clean. Using a wipe on poly-crylic will leave a clear finish that will not turn yellow in time and will create a beautiful satin finish.
STEP 7: ASSEMBLE
Place all your hardware back on the drawers and admire your masterpiece!
