United We Stand. Join Us For A Painting Class On September 11th As We Honor The Fallen And Keep In Remembrance, The Events Of 9-11.
September 17 is ‘Constitution Day’ and with this patriotic and meaningful day approaching, we need to remember a day that most of us will never be able to forget: September 11th. To go a bit more in depth about what constitution day is and the origin behind it, we’ve provided a little information. Get to know a little about this important holiday and what it means to our country; Keep in mind that the 17th anniversary of that dark day in 2001 is about to be here and we’re honoring the fallen with a painting and wine class that will pay tribute to and keep in memory, the victims of 9-11.
Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17, 1787, recognizing all who are born in the U.S. or by naturalization, have become citizens.
Iowa schools first recognized Constitution Day in 1911.[5] In 1917, the Sons of the American Revolution formed a committee to promote Constitution Day. The committee would include members such as Calvin Coolidge, John D. Rockefeller, and General John Pershing.
‘I Am An American Day'
This day was inspired by Arthur Pine, the head of a publicity-public relations firm in New York City bearing his name. At the New York World’s Fair, the writers of a new song called “I am an American” brought their manuscript to the attention of Arthur Pine who handled publicity for the band leader, Gray Gordon, and a music publisher. Arthur Pine had the song introduced on NBC, Mutual, and ABC by the orchestra leader, arranged for an “I am an American Day” at the 1939 New York World's Fair, and had a local New York newspaper tie-in with “I am an American Day” in the city. The promotion proved so successful that a newspaper chain promoted “I am an American Day” on a nationwide basis and had President Roosevelt name it as an official day.
In 1939, William Randolph Hearst advocated, through his chain of daily newspapers, the creation of a holiday to celebrate citizenship. In 1940, Congress designated the third Sunday in May as "I am an American Day." In 1944 "I am an American Day" was promoted through the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. A 16-minute film, I Am an American, was featured in American theaters as a short feature. In 1947 Hearst Newsreels featured the event on News of the Day. By 1949, governors of all 48 states had issued Constitution Day proclamations. On February 29, 1952, Congress moved the "I am an American Day" observation to September 17 and renamed it "Citizenship Day”.
The law establishing the present holiday was created in 2004 with the passage of an amendment by Senator Robert Byrd to the Omnibus spending bill of 2004. Before this law was enacted, the holiday was known as "Citizenship Day". In addition to renaming the holiday "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day," the act mandates that all publicly funded educational institutions, and all federal agencies, provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on that day. In May 2005, the United States Department of Education announced the enactment of this law and that it would apply to any school receiving federal funds of any kind.
****9-11 ANNIVERSARY CLASS****
Join us for our September 11 class, honoring the victims of the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in 2001.
Tuesday, September 11,7-9pm
We will be painting ‘United We Stand’
In times of trouble we come together and Unite, Rescue, and Rebuild. This painting is inspired by the resilience of the good people of our country. This special landscape depicts a colorful, clouded sky in the colors and pattern of our great Nation’s flag. You can customize the artwork to best fit you and your personal connection to the day. Change the type of tree in the painting, add some silhouettes of the Twin Towers or of a loved one, insert some words like a name or quote, or change the painting in any other way. This is your special masterpiece to be designed with you and your home’s occupants in mind as you’ll always have a meaningful work of art to hang on your walls and serve as a reminder of the great time you had, making it, as well as what the painting itself, represents.
If you aren’t able to join us for the ‘United We Stand’ painting in the 11th, we’re hosting an ‘Open Studio’ class on the 12th and you can always come in to create the painting on that day. In these unique classes, there is no instructor to walk you through the painting, step-by-step, as everyone will be creating their own painting. We will have some assistants, there to help you with any part of your painting that you need, including mixing colors. Bring your friends and family in to paint during this special class and spend time in a more, low-key painting and wine class like this one.
