— WHAT EXACTLY IS POP ART? —
The term “Pop Art" was coined in the mid-1950s. It described an artistic movement that celebrated the aesthetics of mass-produced consumer goods, advertisements, and media imagery. Pop Art looked to bridge the gap between high art and popular culture, as a reaction to the abstract expressionism dominating the art scene
The 1960s marked the heyday of Pop Art, with artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and James Rosenquist achieving widespread recognition. Warhol's fascination with consumer goods and celebrity culture led to his iconic works featuring Marilyn Monroe and Campbell's Soup Cans. Lichtenstein's use of comic book motifs and 'Benday dots' reimagined popular imagery in a bold and colorful manner.
Pop Art went beyond traditional artistic media, with Oldenburg creating larger-than-life sculptures of everyday objects like typewriters and hamburgers. Meanwhile, Rosenquist's colossal collages combined fragmented images from advertising to explore the saturation of media in modern society.
