If you’ve ever been to our classes, you know that we always use acrylic paint for our artwork.
Acrylics are fast drying, versatile, water-soluble, have a low odor, and are long-lasting. We love this medium for first-time painters, as it’s easy to use and teach. But we love how oils look on canvas… They add an element of sophistication to artwork that acrylics can’t create, making your masterpiece look extra-impressive!
Here are just a few of the differences between acrylics and oils:
---> DRY TIME
Acrylic paints dry quickly, often within minutes, while oil paints have a much slower drying time, typically taking days to fully dry, depending on thickness.
---> COLOR
Acrylics tend to dry to the same color as when applied, with minimal color shift; Oil paints can undergo a slight color shift as they dry, with some colors becoming slightly darker or more transparent.
---> CLEAN UP
Acrylics are easy to clean up with water and soap while wet, whereas oil paint cleanup requires the use of solvents like turpentine or mineral spirits.
---> LAYERING
Acrylics can be layered relatively quickly due to their fast drying time, but care must be taken to avoid overworking, as they can become less blendable once dry.
Oil paints are ideal for layering and blending, thanks to their slow drying time, which allows for seamless transitions between colors.
