Art and Activism: Expressing Pride through Creative Means
June is here and that means, 'Pride Month’ is celebrated all month long.
June was chosen as Pride Month to honor the Stonewall Riots that took place in June of 1969 in New York City.
The riots marked a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ+ rights movement and are considered a catalyst for the modern fight for equality.
The first Pride March was held on June 28, 1970, marking the one-year anniversary of the riots.
Gay Pride Month serves as an opportunity for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies to come together, celebrate diversity, and advocate for equal rights and social acceptance. It's a time to honor the history and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, while also raising awareness about ongoing challenges and issues they face.
During Pride Month, cities around the world hold Pride parades, festivals, and other events. These celebrations typically involve colorful marches, performances, speeches, educational workshops, and community gatherings. Pride Month allows LGBTQ+ individuals to express themselves authentically, promote visibility, and foster a sense of unity and support.
We’ve got some fabulous artwork on the calendar this month and we hope you’ll stop in to create some!

*** Art & Activism ***
Art plays a significant role in activism during Queer Pride Month. It serves as a powerful tool for self-expression, raising awareness, promoting inclusivity, and challenging societal norms.
Here are some ways art is used in activism during Queer Pride Month:
(1) Visual Arts
These artworks often convey messages of love, acceptance, and the celebration of queer identities. Visual mediums such as painting, photography, graphic design, and street art are used to express diverse experiences and advocate for change.
(2) Parades & Marches
These are vibrant and colorful displays of artistic expression. Participants and spectators often wear elaborate costumes, create intricate floats, and carry banners and signs with powerful messages. These visual elements create a festive atmosphere while promoting visibility and demonstrating solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community.
(3) Performance Art
This includes theater, dance, drag, spoken word, and music, is utilized to convey narratives and challenge societal norms. Performers use their platforms to explore queer experiences, confront stereotypes, and highlight social issues faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.
(4) Public Installations and Exhibitions
These displays can be interactive, thought-provoking, and designed to create dialogue and raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues. Public spaces are transformed into galleries that engage the public in discussions about queer identities and rights.
(5) Zines, Comics, and Literature
These alternative forms of storytelling provide platforms for marginalized voices to be heard and offer a means of representation and empowerment. Zine fairs and literary events during Pride Month provide opportunities for queer creators to share their works with a wider audience.
(6) Film and Documentary
Artists and activists leverage digital mediums to spread messages of love, acceptance, and social change. Hashtags and online campaigns help mobilize support, educate, and create a sense of solidarity among queer individuals worldwide.
(7) Digital Activism and Social Media
Artists and activists leverage digital mediums to spread messages of love, acceptance, and social change. Hashtags and online campaigns help mobilize support, educate, and create a sense of solidarity among queer individuals worldwide.
*** MORE COLORFUL ARTWORK TO CREATE ***
In addition to the rainbow flag, there are various Pride flags that represent specific communities within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. These flags include the transgender flag, bisexual flag, pansexual flag, and many others, each with its own unique colors and symbolism.

The Communications Coordinator for 'All Connect' reached out to us to share some fantastic information.
In honor of Pride Month, their team created an educational guide that focuses on online safety tips and support groups for LGBTQIA+ youth.
Online resources have become vital for the youth to maintain their mental and emotional health, especially for those who experience
isolation and less support from their families or friends.
