Margarita Makeover: Blood Orange Mezcal Marg
It’s safe to say that margaritas are the go-to cocktail for most people. They’re easy to make, delicious, and can really pack a punch. But every now and then, the classic lime-and-tequila version feels a little tired. Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, and it’s a good time to shake things up… no pun intended. The blood orange mezcal margarita is refreshing, complex and unforgettably delicious. And thanks to the unique hue of blood orange juice, it’s totally Instagrammable. Mezcal is an agave spirit and close relative of tequila, but with a slightly smoky flavor thanks to a different production process. It adds an interesting layer to this drink, but if you prefer, feel free to use regular tequila instead.
INGREDIENTS
(Makes 1 margarita)
• 1 oz. blood orange juice
• 1.5 oz. fresh lime juice
• 2 oz. Mezcal
• 1 oz. orange liqueur (such as Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Triple Sec)
• Agave nectar to taste
• Black lava salt for the rim (optional, but makes for a killer presentation)
METHOD
If you’re fresh-squeezing your oranges (recommended), just be aware that blood oranges generally aren’t as juicy as regular oranges. If you’re making a batch of margaritas, you might need a couple more blood oranges than you’d expect.
Use a wedge of lime to moisten the edge of your margarita glass and dip it in the salt.
Combine juices, agave nectar, mezcal and orange liqueur in a shaker with ice. Shake shake shake! Strain into your beautifully-rimmed glass, garnish with a slice of blood orange, and get the party started!
