An epitome of summer in the Pacific Northwest, the huckleberry is a widespread favourite among all types. It has gained notoriety for its refusal to be cultivated, harvested mainly from wild sources. It takes 15 years for a bush to reach maturity, grows only in high elevations in volcanic ash-dense soil, and is nearly exclusive to Alaska, Canada, and the Pacific Northwest. Competition between harvesters and wildlife makes this berry a coveted commodity. Bursting with flavour, a little more tart than a blueberry, this purple fruit makes its way into all sorts of seasonal goodies. From candies, jams, syrups and pies, and of course all the way to beers and wines.
At Pinot's Palette Spokane, we offer two such delicious beverages. From Ponderay, ID we have the Laughing Dog Huckleberry Cream Ale. It has a malty, slightly sweet flavour and light mouth feel and is a favourite among our ale lovers. And of course, from Spokane Valley itself, we have Latah Creek Huckleberry Riesling. This rose is sweet with a strong huckleberry taste. It flies off the shelf--and for good reason!
Now that the weather's warming up, huckleberry season is fast approaching. Prime huckleberry sights are hard-pressed secrets among pickers, and the heat and bears can be a real deterrent from hunting these berries down. But we've got you covered! Come on down to a paint class and get your huckleberry fix!
