Rock On
As I was getting a coffee around the corner at Sweet Frostings Bakery today, I saw one of their display cakes and was immediately taken aback. This sweet confectionary was designed to look like none other than a beautiful, raw geode!(Cake at Sweet Frosting)
Aside from looking delicious and creative, it reminded me of our own geode-inspired art! There seems to be a universal renewed interest in rocks and minerals. Whether it's an interest in alternative medicine and metaphysics, in the raw beauty of this earth in trying times, or just because they're so darn cool, geodes are all the rage right now!
For the uninitiated, you might wonder what the difference between a geode and a gemstone is. In principle, nothing. In practice, and geode is the raw, unrefined rock from which a gemstone is cut. Gemstones can be cut in a mutlitude of ways to bring out shifts in light and make them sparkle and shine. A geode may be similarly sparkly, but all the imperfections and impurities haven't been carefully cut away. It may also be a cross-section of rock. Especially with rocks that down make crystals (like lapis lazuli for example), a geode may not be all sharp edges and jagged peaks. It is no less lovely to look at though!
We are really digging this trend here, and not just because it means we get to play with glitter! :) If you'd like your own piece of raw beauty, you can join us on the 18th to customize your own artwork and rock on!
