Crafts The Whole Family Will Love:
Paper Bag Monster Puppets
These kooky creatures make story time more exciting.

The BFG Paper Plate Dream Catchers
Have you kiddos craft a way to catch their dreams each night, inspired by the classic Roald Dahl book, The BFG.

Coffee filter snowflakes
There is no lovelier craft than paper snowflakes and this is an especially simple version. Flatten a white coffee filter into a circle. Fold the filter in half, then into quarters, then eighths. It should look like a pie slice. Cut shapes along the edges of the wedge, then open and smooth the filter out to reveal — ta da! — a perfect snowflake! The great thing about this project is that kids can cut the folded coffee filter on any side and it will still open into a single, beautiful snowflake.
Pretend snow
When it’s dark or too cold outside and the kids still want to play with snow, why not try this recipe for pretend snow by Little Bins Little Hands: https://litt...sensory-play/
To make this snowy concoction, you'll need a large tray, some corn starch, baking soda and water. This fake snow molds well and is lots of fun for kids to dig into to create their own snowballs or snow people. It should last for about 7–10 days in an airtight container.
Pinecone bird feeder.
These are so inexpensive and simple to do. And they’ll keep kids busy for a good couple of hours, from the sourcing of the pinecones to the messy rolling in birdseed, to the hanging outdoors.

Make sun catchers or “stained glass”.
What are sun catchers and how to make them?

We are partial to the tissue-paper stained glass for little kids and the melted-bead sun catchersfor older kids, but take your pick!

Make your own play-dough.
You don’t need lots of special play-dough tools to do something different: use kitchen tools or play-toolbox tools.

*** GET COOKIN' ***
DIY Pizzas
Ready-made pizza crusts are easily available and always handy to have around. Toppings can include loads of veggies, pineapple, sausage, and cheese. Lots of fun, and dinner’s ready when you’re done.
Cookies & Cocoa
Bring out a handed-down family recipe or find one online that you’d liek to try and teach the kids how to measure, stir, and bake!
(Pair the treats with a cocoa bar):
The kids are likely happy with hot chocolate alone, but to make it a super-special activity, plan a hot cocoa bar. Stock up on all your favorite toppings: marshmallows (in different flavours), sprinkles, whipped cream, coconut, white-chocolate shavings, mini chocolate chips, toasted nuts, cinnamon, caramel, Pirouette cookies, wafer cookies for crumbling or dipping…the sky’s the limit!
Ok, so this is the opposite of cooking but…
Make ice cream using snow.
Remember those old Snoopy Snow Cone machines? (You can still buy them, BTW.)
These recipes for DIY snow ice-cream are the same idea: https://www....ecipes-609166
**Just be sure to find fresh snow. No snow? You can use crushed ice, too.
Have a family competition for who can come up with the best recipe from the contents of your kitchen. Be sure to set a time limit and have a panel of judges.

*** ENTERTAIN ONE ANOTHER ***
Make Your Own Movie!
Is there anything more fun for kids that watching themselves? Come up with a simple plot, get some props and costumes together, and write a loose screenplay. Older kids can help edit, too. Then screen it for everyone.
Sing Karaoke
Find karaoke songs on YouTube, or download the Sing! Karaoke by Smule app for iPhone or Android and sing your hearts out!

Play board games and/or card games.
Do some research into age-appropriate games (Board Game Geek is great) and invest in a new one—it’ll be worth it for rainy or cold days and trips to the cottage for years to come. Don’t have a game on hand? Try a DIY game like the guessing game Boticelli.
*** SCIENTIFIC FUN ***

Crystal science experiments teach kids about supersaturated solutions. This one is easy to do at home, and the results are absolutely delicious!

Demonstrate the “magic” leakproof bag
So simple and so amazing! All you need is a zip-top plastic bag, sharp pencils, and some water to blow your kids’ minds. Once they’re suitably impressed, teach them how the “trick” works by explaining the chemistry of polymers.

Conduct an egg drop
Put all their engineering skills to the test with an egg drop! Challenge kids to build a container from stuff they find around the house that will protect an egg from a long fall (this is especially fun to do from upper-story windows).
